DevPost Question for devs - Game Server Providers

Devs,

I've been in touch with a few Euro GSP's, including some of the largest ones, and pretty much none of them have any plans at the moment to host Section 8 game servers.

In fact one of the largest came back and said there are significant challenges due to the Windows Live system employed. This is a copy/paste from their email:

"I cant be more specific as there are some significant issues with Games for Windows Live which may prevent anyone doing servers properly"

So....question for the devs, have you been in touch with Euro game server providers to have servers ready for rent when the game is released next week? If so, can you please name them as I'd like to arrange a server for Euro Gamers.

Thanks!

Found these while rooting around:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/ho...ver-for-pc-360
http://electronictheatre.co.uk/index...ver-technology
http://www.aeropause.com/2009/08/sec...or-360-and-pc/

TimeGate themselves put out a press release on this:

http://www.joinsection8.com/uk/#press (might need to look through the press release to find it. It's called Dedicated Servers Press Release).

It says, and I quote:

The X server software will be distributed free of charge* upon Section 8's launch
The little * just goes to a thing at the bottom that says "Internet Connection fees are the responsibility of the player"

Problem is that the server hosts I've talked to in the UK have said they cannot host it. One said because it's not Linux (X Server is MS), another due to the Windows Live. The second one uses MS servers, but has tried the X Server software and it's not compatable with their kit.

ouch? That's not good news!

Altough our clan has it's own box, and since the server package is free I'll let our resident sysadmin get grey hairs on that one.

But if it's too complicated to get running, ie. it takes days browsing forums etc. to get it to run properly, then he'll simply call it a miss since he has other games to play.

There are plenty of GfWL titles that have dedicated servers that server companies host

to be honest it sounds like a problem on their end, not the game. I heard the same crap when UT3 first came out. Of course UT3 does not have Windows live, but i was told by several host companies that they could not host UT3 due to problems with the game. A week later i had a server that ran just fine.

Alot of these companies don't know jack about hosting games and when pressed about a new game, if they don't have an answer they blame the game rather than trying to figure it out. Not a good way to run a company.

I hope you're right, however from what I'm being told (and remember I'm relating info) they've already tried something similar.

Not having the ability for a GSP to host ded servers would kill this game.

What would clear this up is something from the devs themselves (the thread title says it's a question for the devs). I'm waiting for them to comment since all we can do it guess.

Ahhh, sorry, hadn't realised you'd posted Drew. Thanks for that

Drew, is there any chance at all of having a UK-based GSP contact you guys direct? They're telling me they've got technical challenges, you're telling me it should be ok. Seems it'd make more sense to get rid of the middle man (me) and you guys talk direct.

All I want is to be able to get a UK-based ded server next week.
