Aliens: Colonial Marines

I know this doesn't come out for a few months, but this is a game I'm definitely looking forward to! Anyone else a fan of the Aliens movies wanting to get this game?

Alien_of_Change December 9th, 2012 02:48 AM

I might get it when it can be bought much cheaper than on release. The trailers and small bits of gameplay from E2 etc. make me feel like the singleplayer is going to be heavily scripted which is "againts a proper Aliens atmosphere" in my opinion. The multiplayer is a bit more interesting but the movement looks very slow which I'm not fan of. But it has aliens so maybe it's still going to be fun to play. Especially if Survival/Infection mode is copied from Aliens vs Predator games and we get to use Facehuggers again!

I lost interest the moment I saw the E3 footage.

Last time I checked, FPS games are not supposed to be an interactive movie.

Whats the ETA for the game?

I'm only interested in the singleplayer, depending on how that is, I may or may not get it. I'm more interested in other games anyway, this one doesn't exactly stand out enough for me, even if I am a fan of the movies.

Those Aliens better have proper acid blood too, overwise it's not a proper Aliens game. Bloody idiots.

henyachingywhy December 9th, 2012 06:29 PM

I'm mainly getting it for the co-op and the competitive multiplayer. The last AvP's multiplayer was just awful. I really hope they make it better in this one.

It was still fun, but just how they set it up was slow. I guess.

The new coop survival mode looks like a worse version of Natural Selection.

Cautiously Optimistic..

This games concept art makes it look intense.

This game holds the potential to be an instant classic, or get botched and be an embarrassing sidestep.

I have some good memories playing Aliens 3 (1995) and getting really scared playing at night. I seem to remember feeling the same way about our friend Alma also. I hope you guys can tap into that good, creepy vibe that all the fear games bring to the table. If so this game will be amazing.

There are a couple things that come to mind specifically that I would like to see and there are a few things I would like to not happen.

One is the rigging and animation. I don't see things like this attempted in games to much and it would kill the atmosphere if the movements of the Aliens look to clunky or robotic, to symmetrical or to forced. I saw how James Cameron pulls off the movements of the Ikrans in Avatar using optical motion capture. I'm sure a rig could be built and an alien carved from weighted foam material, each of the limbs attached to a cable that is controlled by a person like a marionette. Think 'adult indoor swing' type frame suspending a foam core alien mannequin torso.rig.thing. Yea.. it looks plausible in my head. Anyway you guys are professionals and I'm sure it'll look great! I have complete faith in you!

Another is Alien control. I'm not sure what you guys have in mind but when I imagine playing I would see climbing as being an important aspect of the character movements. I imagine being able to move on the walls with the same fluidity as the tentacles in the game Darkness. But have a stride and presence on the wall simular to brain monsters from Resident Evil.

If you do a pc version it would be nice if you made it open to modding like Elder Scrolls. Fans constantly expand and improve your game which keeps it fresh. I'm not sure how the legal stuff would work but it seems like you could make it so people could sell their mods, TG getting a cut and owning the mods once submitted. Streamline your favorite mods as dlc for consoles. Everyone wins. Everyone.

Another is new weapons and character customizations. What year is this? Imo all games need some level of character customization. Much, much more than in s8. With the weapons. It would be nice to see more improvised weapons, something that exists in this future world. Something you just grabbed off the tool bench because you had to defend yourself, and wadda you know? It's great for mowing down Aliens.

The new Prometheus movie has opened up a window for creative development. *spoiler* at the end the Alien mutates after joining with the human DNA. Perhaps once an alien consumes human DNA it mutates and gains killstreak rewards, stronger, faster, exoskeleton, exploding corpse acid shower, acid spit. So on and so forth.

I have a silly prediction that the audiance that the game will effect will respond to it similarly to games like brink or even f3ar. I think they will love playing through the campaign, and be fiercely into the online play, but burn out on it pretty quickly. Not as a reflection on anyone or anything but just because its what I would call a genre game. Niche Market to begin with. And its going to be hard to keep the online play current.

So yea overall I can't wait to see what direction the game gets taken in.

Lactose February 11th, 2013 11:44 AM

Lol, this game is getting very poor reviews and impressions. Though I haven't heard anything about the multiplayer modes so that might actually be good. I believe that's what Timegate worked on.

Apparently the story, graphics, gunplay, and ai are all pretty bad.

Alien_of_Change February 11th, 2013 12:13 PM

I'm not really surprised of the reviews, to be honest. Oh well, I hope the Ultimate Badass difficulty can be played without having to complete the game first. That should make the singleplayer more fun since there's no HUD.

Rossinna-Sama February 11th, 2013 12:58 PM

Not really surprised, called it ages ago. But then again, this is what they were aiming for, wasn't it? Another game which is basically a watered down movie which might as well actually be a movie? I'd actually consider it then if I didn't have to put up with the super linear gameplay.

As for Multiplayer, you can see that its actually quite enjoyable from the videos I've seen. As far as I am aware, This was where most of Timegate's effort went due to them being Outsourced to do such. Though I've already witnessed the typical problem of most of these gamemodes - the Aliens need the Marines to split up or to make mistakes. When the Marines don't oblige, its a stomp.

Not using my white font until the site's updated. Perhaps I should go pink?

Not a problem in public matches :p

Orange looks cool too.

Rossinna-Sama February 11th, 2013 01:12 PM

For those wondering. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roYZJB3BT8I has Multiplayer footage.
No, I don't have anything to do with the channel, just a random video I found while I'm killing time.

plasma wing February 11th, 2013 01:40 PM

I cancelled my pre-order yesterday. I've no interest in the multiplayer at all and I've heard the singleplayer might be a bit crap too.

Give it a couple of months and I reckon it'll £20-£25. I'll end up asking the parents to get it for my birthday in May in that case, better than just getting money.

I'd say Gearbox are highly overrated, I've not been impressed since Borderlands.
